Sustainability
At Frith Meadow, we are deeply committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Our goal is to minimise our environmental impact, support local ecosystems, and promote sustainable practices in all aspects of our operations. This policy outlines our efforts and initiatives to achieve these objectives.
1. Off-Grid, Eco-Friendly Construction and Materials
Sustainable Foundations:
We used small-scale foundations to reduce ground disturbance and protect tree roots and wildlife habitats. This method minimises impact on the land and promotes long-term environmental health.
Local and Sustainable Sourcing:
Our building materials are sourced locally and sustainably wherever possible. This includes cedar from the woodland where we were married in South Herefordshire, along with eco friendly insulation such as sheep's wool and recycled newspaper. Wood fibre boards, plaster, and eco clay paints were used to finish the walls.
Second Hand Materials:
We have sourced many of our materials from second hand suppliers, charity shops, and local vintage shops. The flooring in the kitchen/dining room is made from reclaimed gym boards, and the wooden panelling in the master bedroom is from old deck boards salvaged from our previous site.
Eco Friendly Insulation:
We use sheep's wool and recycled newspaper (WarmCell) insulation, which provides effective thermal regulation while utilising renewable resources.
Wood Fibre Boards:
The walls are constructed using wood fibre board from TyMawr, a fabulous initiative and an eco friendly alternative to plasterboard.
Borehole:
Our borehole was sunk 94 metres deep to ensure the cleanest possible water supply. The water is pumped and stored, then sediment filtered and UV treated. The system is tested annually.
PV Solar Panels:
Our nine solar panels power our off grid cabin. This energy is stored in batteries and supplies all electricity across the site. During the winter months, when the sun sits lower, a backup generator is used to top up the batteries as needed.
2. Wildlife and Habitat Conservation
Rewilding and Planting:
We are dedicated to rewilding areas of our four acre plot. We have removed fencing leading into the woodland, encouraging biodiversity to spread naturally into the meadow. We also plant trees and hedgerows to attract and support local wildlife. This includes creating wildflower meadows that support small mammals, insects, and pollinators.
Birdlife:
Our land supports a diverse range of birds, including buzzards, red kites, owls, and goshawks.
Deer:
Our woodland is home to a resident family of deer.
Nature Trails:
We have established mown pathways through the meadows, allowing guests to explore and connect with nature while minimising disturbance.
3. Water and Waste Management
Rainwater Harvesting:
We harvest rainwater for flushing toilets, watering trees, and supporting wildlife, reducing our reliance on the bore hole water source.
Recycling and Waste Reduction:
Clear signage is provided at recycling stations to encourage responsible waste management among guests. We also repurpose materials wherever possible to minimise waste.
4. Eco- Friendly Amenities
Natural Toiletries and Cleaning Products:
We use natural, eco-friendly, and refillable toiletries and cleaning products, including compostable sponges. This reduces our reliance on single use plastics and harsh chemicals.
Dark Sky Friendly Lighting:
Our site is dark sky friendly, with minimal outdoor lighting directed downwards using warm LED bulbs. This protects nocturnal wildlife and allows guests to experience the natural beauty of the night sky.
5. Sustainable Partnerships and Practices
Local Collaborations:
We work closely with local businesses to promote sustainable practices and support the local economy.
Seasonal and Local Welcome Baskets:
Our Taste of Herefordshire welcome basket features local produce such as Boulanger seeded Sourdough bread, locally roasted Method Coffee and Weobley Ash apple juice . This is plastic free and supports local producers and reduces food miles.
6. Continuous Improvement and Guest Engagement
Guest Education:
We provide guests with clear information about our sustainability practices and how they can contribute during their stay, including guidance on electrics usage, waste management, water conservation, and respect for wildlife.
Feedback and Improvement:
We are committed to continuously improving our sustainability efforts and welcome feedback from our guests to help identify areas for enhancement.
At Frith Meadow, we believe sustainable tourism is not only possible but essential. By integrating eco- friendly practices into every aspect of our operations, we aim to create a magical, responsible, and environmentally conscious experience for all our guests.
